Today’s post isn’t going to be outfit related, but rather, as a way for me to catch up with you all. These past few months have been a HUGE whirlwind for me. So many opportunities have opened to me, and as such, I’ve become rather disorganized. I’m spending this winter break to re-organize my life and work on streamlining what my life has become.
One of the biggest things that happened to me over the past quarter was being hired as Staff Writer for my school’s newspaper, the Highlander. Not only that, I was able to work hard enough where I was given the opportunity to start a fashion column will appear every week in the paper (it’s called The Cytherial Factor!!). I’m able to use it as an extension of Cytherial.com and with it, I’ll be able to share fashion guides just like what I’ve been doing on this blog, but in print format!
On top of working for the newspaper, I’ve also done A TON of fashion shoots for bloggers and friends which has helped me learn a lot about the medium that got me into blogging in the first place. I’ve gathered enough material that I’m confident enough in to compile a portfolio together! I started getting the site together this week and finally bought the domain name with the money I received from my family during Christmas. The site is now live and available for viewing at cytherialphotography.com, and from here on out, I’ll only post my most notable fashion photography work here, all of my other work will be relegated to the portfolio site/blog. On top of the new blog, I’m still going strong with shooting; I’ve booked a ton of shoots over the course of this break with friends and bloggers all over Los Angeles which will continue to help me grow as a photographer.
Finally, I’ve become confident enough to start reaching out to stores and brands to collaborate on projects together! And I’ve even had a few brands reach out to me too! Although I had to turn a few of them down, I have one that I will start working together with in the near future. I’m also talking to a store to set up a collaboration, which I’m super excited about. Along with collaborating with brands, I’ve also begun collaborating with a few talented photographers based in Riverside and Los Angeles. It’ll provide fresh new pictures for the blog, and new ways of looking at my outfit posts. I’m excited to see what they will help bring to the blog in the future.
Honestly, 2014 hasn’t been the happiest year I’ve ever had, but it has provided me with the biggest amount of growth. I’ve matured so much as a person and artist over the past year. While life has thrown me a huge curveball by letting me discover my interest in fashion so late in my academic career, I’ve come to realize that uncertainty of the future is what makes life so much fun. It’s do or die, to be honest. I’ve lived so comfortably in the past, with my future planned out for me, from going to high school, to attending a university, my future always seemed so certain. And as I’m preparing to graduate, I feel like the rug has been pulled out from under me and I really don’t know what to do next. I know I have a general direction of where I want to go in life, I want to work in fashion and photography, but the path doesn’t seem as clear as it was when I entered college.
Maybe 2015 will be the year I get a better idea of where to go in life. I’m excited for the new prospects that these opportunities hold for me. I really want to thank all of my friends and supporters who have helped me along the way, especially my friends Linh (linhwinn), Stephanie (divenire), Kunal (dapper.k) and Allen (fonzii), they’ve become an invaluable support system for me on this journey as a fashion blogger and photographer. I couldn’t have done it without a little help from my friends. ;]
Life isn’t always as clear cut as you would hope it would be. No matter how much you try to maintain control of the route your life is heading, sometimes you just need to sit back, see what it has to offer you, and roll with the punches. I have a lot of content to share with you in the next few weeks, so stay tuned!
